Cuttings of the Black Spirals

As my body was moving through Bolzano without any logic - following the path of whatever was catching my eyes - my mind seemed to take advantage of these moments of idleness to also wonder in similar yet separate patterns.

Both movements are linked through your body but yet flow towards their own path, with no destination in sight.

I started noticing the spiral shape, repeating itself through the city as a silent weed growing.

The black iron fences, shaped by unknown hands through many centuries, seem to take over the city.

All of them united in forms and yet unique in composition.

I started noticing their differences and their character, some were more calm and nicely contained, some more wild, some even felt loving and inviting, while some felt out of place and slightly out of their mind. I couldn’t help but wonder … were those the feeling of the men or of the craft. Such are the attribute of something that has been shaped by hand, blurring the boundaries between what is thought and what is felt.

I tried to go all in with my feelings (as per usual, at my own risk) and trust the movement of my hands, trying to subdue my thoughts to the bare minimum, some sort of meditation.

From one pencil I drew the first spiral from what seemed to be the most natural gesture and the rest just followed, stopping only once the spiral felt contained and couldn’t grow any further. In this drawing I exercise the power you can give to your body over the need to think and analyse. All results are given the space to exist and what you decide to keep in the end is personal. It starts without hierarchy, but with multitude.

Ultimately I hope this exhibition feels like an invitation to observe your surroundings more carefully, take the time to feel and enjoy the forms around you, the complex links between what you see, think and feel.
